The lives of the two young Chinese men cross at a fast food restaurant during the summer in the ancient town of Yueyang. Nineteen-year-old student Huang takes a delivery job to support himself while skating with his friends. Eighteen-year-old Liu dropped out of high school and now owns several small catering businesses. Parallel observes the peers’ intersecting lives, challenging the audience to choose a favorite.

Yuejiao Jiang is a documentary filmmaker from China. She makes observational documentary films because she believes that documentaries are growing wildly, and filmmakers are the lucky ones who are able to find and participate in these stories. Parallel is her capstone project before graduating from the Jonathan B. Murray Center for Documentary Journalism at the University of Missouri. She has learned a lot from this filmmaking process and is looking forward to finding telling more intriguing stories in the future.
