A young black journalist uncovers the story of a seemingly forgotten trailblazer who challenged the Missouri School of Journalism to admit its first Black student. Determined to retrieve footage of Lucile Bluford and understand why she is drawn to her, the young journalist expunges on a multi-generational journey to interlock the voices of generations to make sense of herself, of the evolution of racism and of the reality of being Black in America.

Originally from Dallas, Kennedy McGilvery is a documentary filmmaker and visual journalist. She is a May 2023 graduate from the Murray Center for Documentary Journalism with minors in Digital Storytelling and Sociology. Throughout her time at the University of Missouri, Kennedy has become a passionate videographer and editor who has created films for the Murray Center and Columbia Missourian. Kennedy hopes to continue making films about the rich history of communities and the people that make them up. Sharp Ends is Kennedy’s first film, which follows her journey of understanding modern-day racism in Columbia, Missouri. During the documentary, Kennedy tries to find archival footage of the journalist and activist Lucile Bluford.
